A WhatsApp AI agent built for Meta's 2026 chatbot policy

Meta bans general-purpose AI chatbots on the WhatsApp Business Platform — an LLM answering any question, on any topic. What it still allows, and actively encourages, is AI scoped to one business task: booking, lead qualification, customer support, order tracking. WpAi's chatbot was built that way from the start.

Short answer: WpAi's AI agent ships as one of four fixed purposes — Booking Agent, Lead Generation, Customer Support, Custom — each with its own system prompt and its own job. It runs on the Cloud API channel, through WpAi's Meta Tech Provider access, and on WhatsApp Web. There is no open-domain mode to accidentally ship.

How WpAi's AI agent is scoped

Four fixed purposes, not one open mode

Booking Agent proposes and confirms appointment slots, re-validated server-side against your real schedule before anything is written. Lead Generation reads a conversation and extracts structured fields — name, requirement, budget, timeline — rather than guessing from free text. Customer Support answers from a knowledge base you write, up to 20,000 characters, and hands off on keywords you choose. Custom is yours to define, and stays your responsibility to keep scoped.

A model choice, not a black box

Groq is the default provider, with OpenAI and Anthropic available, or your own API key. Every reply is metered at the token level, so the cost of the AI layer is visible, not bundled into a mystery number.

A rule layer runs first

Keyword automation — exact matches, canned replies — answers before the AI is ever called. The LLM only picks up what the rules did not, which keeps routine answers instant and the AI budget spent on conversations that need it.

Common questions

Is my WhatsApp AI chatbot still allowed in 2026?
It depends on what it does, not that it uses AI. Meta’s policy, in force for existing WhatsApp Business API accounts since January 15, 2026, bans general-purpose AI chatbots — an LLM that will answer questions on any topic, the way a general assistant does. It explicitly allows and encourages AI scoped to a defined business task: booking, lead qualification, customer support, order tracking. WpAi’s chatbot ships as one of four fixed purposes — Booking Agent, Lead Generation, Customer Support, or Custom — each with its own system prompt, so it is built the compliant way by default. If you configure the Custom purpose to answer literally anything, keeping it scoped is still your responsibility.
What counts as a "general-purpose" AI chatbot under Meta’s rule?
One that is not restricted to a specific business process — the kind that would happily discuss the weather, write code, or draft marketing copy on request, the way ChatGPT or Perplexity would. A bot that books appointments, answers questions about your products, or qualifies a lead and hands off to a human is exactly what Meta still allows.
Which AI models power WpAi’s chatbot?
Groq by default, with OpenAI and Anthropic available, or you can bring your own API key. Replies fall back automatically across providers if one is unavailable, every reply is metered so you can see what each conversation costs, and the bot holds a trailing memory window of recent messages so replies stay contextual rather than one-shot.
Can the AI actually book an appointment, or does it just say it will?
It proposes a slot, but the booking is only written after the server re-checks it against your real schedule — business hours, working days, slot capacity, and a duplicate-booking guard. A model confirming a slot that is actually closed gets corrected, not trusted.
Does the AI hand off to a human agent?
Yes. You can set handoff keywords that route a conversation to your team, and any manual reply from an agent mutes the bot on that conversation automatically, so the two never talk over each other.
